CNA Certification Requirements in New Mexico

There are no complicated procedures for obtaining nurse aide certification in New Mexico. When you achieve acceptable scores on both parts of the competency exam, Prometric will mail your certificate to you and add your name to the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry as an active Certified Nurse Aide. Initial CNA certification will allow you to work as a nurse aide in New Mexico for a period of two years.

How to Renew Your CNA Certification in New Mexico

In New Mexico, you must renew your CNA certification every two years. To do this, you must have worked for at least eight hours during the last 24 months. To renew, go to the Prometric/New Mexico Nurse Aide Exam webpage. On that page, click on “CNA Registry Services.” Then, on "New Mexico Renewal/Recertification." This will lead you to the CNA certification renewal application.

How to Reinstate Your CNA Certification in New Mexico

If you do not work as a nurse aide in New Mexico for eight hours or more during the two years prior to your renewal date, you will be required to reinstate your certification. You will need to retake the CNA competency exam to accomplish this if your expiration date is within the past 24 months at the time of reinstatement application. If your certificate expired more than two years ago, then you must retrain also.

How to Transfer Your CNA Certification from New Mexico to Another State

The first thing you need to do to transfer your nurse aide certification out of New Mexico to a different state is locate the new state's nurse aide regulatory agency. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing provides an updated list of these agencies. Once you find the appropriate agency, you will need to contact them to learn their requirements. While many states allow transferring through reciprocity, some have additional requirements.
